New Delhi: To address the healthcare challenges faced by senior citizens, the government
expanded the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) on
October 29, 2024. The revised scheme now provides free annual medical benefits of up to ₹5
lakh for individuals aged 70 and above, regardless of socio-economic status.
Health Minister J.P. Nadda highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce economic hardships
for the elderly, many of whom suffer from chronic diseases and lack access to affordable
healthcare. Beneficiaries can enroll for the Ayushman Vay Vandana card through mobile
apps, web portals, or a dedicated helpline.
The scheme covers over 1,900 procedures across 27 medical specialties, offering treatments
such as dialysis, joint replacements, and cardiac care. Empanelled hospitals are incentivized
for quality accreditation, and dedicated kiosks and healthcare guides ensure beneficiaries
receive seamless assistance.
This expansion is a significant step towards strengthening healthcare access and reducing
vulnerabilities among the elderly population.
