Delhi’s Heatwave Fuels Surge in Stomach-Related Illnesses

With temperatures nearing 45°C, Delhi is in the grip of a severe heatwave, prompting health
concerns as hospitals report a surge in digestive issues. Symptoms like bloating, acidity,

diarrhoea, nausea, and loss of appetite are becoming increasingly common, say medical
professionals.
Experts point out that extreme heat indirectly impacts digestion. As the body works harder
to cool itself down, blood flow is redirected from the digestive tract to the skin, which
slows down digestive processes. This can lead to feelings of heaviness, indigestion, and
reduced enzyme activity, says Dr. Manoj Gupta, head of Liver Transplant & Surgical
Gastroenterology at PSRI Hospital.
Dehydration plays a central role in these symptoms. According to Dr. Sudeep Khanna from
Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, patients with pre-existing gut issues like IBS or functional
dyspepsia are especially vulnerable. Others are developing symptoms purely due to fluid
loss and poor dietary choices during the heat.
Common risks include low saliva and gastric juice production, which affects digestion.
Meanwhile, increased intake of cold drinks, raw salads, and street food—often lacking in
hygiene—has led to a spike in bacterial infections, stomach cramps, and viral diarrhoea.
Doctors urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid stale or exposed food, and maintain
hygienic eating habits to prevent heat-induced digestive ailments.
