Unseasonal Rains in Gujarat Kill 18, Damage Homes and Livestock

Unseasonal rains and strong thunderstorms in Gujarat have caused the deaths of 18 people
and injured 38 others, state officials confirmed. The latest incidents occurred on May 6, when
three people died in Ahmedabad, Anand, and Chhota Udepur after trees fell on them. Another
person died in Dahod after a wall collapse.
The extreme weather has been hitting Gujarat since May 4, leading to widespread damage.
Along with the human toll, 117 cattle have died due to the storms. Heavy rainfall and strong
winds have also damaged over 1,300 homes—both kutcha (temporary) and pucca
(permanent).
These unexpected weather events have raised concerns among farmers, residents, and local
authorities. The damage to homes, livestock, and crops may have long-term effects on rural
livelihoods, especially in already vulnerable areas.
Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing, with local disaster management teams working to
provide aid to affected families and repair damaged infrastructure. However, with more rain
expected in some parts of the state, authorities are urging people to stay cautious.
Unseasonal weather is becoming increasingly common in India, and experts say there’s a
need for better preparedness to deal with such climate-related disruptions in the future.
