Rising Respiratory Health Claims in Delhi: An Alarming Trend

A recent report by Medi Assist and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals an 8.3% rise in
respiratory health claims in Delhi from FY23 to FY25. This increase aligns with a consistent
annual growth rate of 10-12% in respiratory disorders, underscoring the escalating health
impacts of urban pollution. Delhi and Maharashtra, known for their high pollution levels,
reported the most significant number of claims, indicating a strong correlation between
environmental factors and respiratory ailments.
In response to these challenges, Medi Assist and BCG introduced the Borderless Health
framework at the 2024 Raksha Summit in Mumbai. This initiative aims to bridge healthcare
gaps through data integration, automation, and mobile-enabled solutions. “By embracing
Borderless Health, India can work towards a unified, sustainable healthcare system by 2047,”
said Satish Gidugu, CEO of Medi Assist.
The effects of pollution extend beyond health, affecting the economy and daily life. Hospitals
report a 60% surge in respiratory emergencies, with insurers predicting a rise in claims
related to non-communicable diseases. The corporate sector is also grappling with reduced
productivity and higher operational costs, prompting some to consider relocation. Experts
warn that addressing Delhi’s air quality crisis requires immediate, coordinated action to
mitigate long-term societal and economic impacts.
